HRVATSKI TELEKOM SUPPORTS UNIGLUKO, INNOVATIVE SYSTEM FOR TRANSFER AND ANALYSIS OF DIABETES DATA

uniGluko is an integral solution for a safe, accurate and timely transfer of data and access to data about blood glucose levels, and for support in dealing with diabetes which significantly improves patient’s life quality, affects treatment outcomes and cuts health care system costs. Besides that, uniGluko offers support services for doctors and patients in treating diabetes.

“The system was developed by the company SD Informatika and the researchers of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, and Hrvatski Telekom recognized the potential in its early phase and participated in the design of the final service and in bringing it to the production level, placing it in the Data center of Hrvatski Telekom with the highest level of scalability and safety,” Marijo Volarević, director of E-company Department of Hrvatski Telekom, pointed out.

The system is in its pilot phase and is already being used in several hospitals in cooperation with Croatian Health Insurance Fund, and it was presented to the delegation of World Health Organization and to a number of patient associations and expert conferences.

uniGluko sustavExperts estimate that 80 % of health complications related to diabetes, such as blindness and amputation, can be prevented if the patients adhere to a healthy diet, exercise regularly and check their blood sugar level daily.

Integrity of the measured data is a common problem for medical professionals due to, among other things, a great number of different glucometers on the market, each having their own software and connection – with the patients’ readings often being inaccurate.

uniGluko’s integrated solution for diabetes includes hardware and software for the exam rooms, mobile application and devices for the patient, as well as backend in the cloud. The solution connects with almost every type of glucometer, which makes monitoring of blood sugar level easier to both patients and doctors. Given that the data is stored in the cloud and can be accessed from anywhere, doctors can easily read the measurements and chose the best therapy for the patient.

Luka Celić, uniGluko director, said that at the moment uniGluko offers one of the best technological solutions in the world when talking about blood sugar digital data transfer, because it solves the problem of collecting and analysing data from a great number of different glucometers. Through the innovative device for people with diabetes and the device for doctors, data is transferred from the glucometer to the central server in the cloud in a few dozens of seconds. The transferred data is available to the doctor and the person with diabetes on the computer or smartphone. The advantage for the people with diabetes is adherence to the therapy, for the doctors the advantage is easier and faster data analysis, and for the health care institutions quality disease monitoring. The innovation and advantages of uniGluko were also noticed by other health care system participants: the Union of Diabetes Associations, patients, Ministry of Health, Croatian Health Insurance Fund, doctors and the representatives of glucometer manufacturers.

Founders of uniGluko are Ratko Mađarević, Luka Celić, Saša Cvetojević and SD Informatika led by Siniša Drobnjak. At the beginning of June, German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom, with over 198 million users in more than 50 countries worldwide, invested in uniGluko through its business incubator Hubraum, and it’s preparing it for the market. DT estimated the value of the company at over million euros.

“We’ve been in contact with uniGluko team for a while now. Considering the complexity of their product and business model, a lot of coordination was needed, but now I can confidently say that uniGluko is a unique combination of scientific and entrepreneurial spirit and it will put Croatia on the map of Europe as a country with one of the most advanced digital e-health systems. The project came to existence as a fruit of research and with the right combination of support and entrepreneurial approach it transformed into something really unique. With Hrvatski Telekom, uniGluko gained a new dimension and the possibility of scaling the product to the rest of Europe.” Luka Sučić from Hubraum pointed out.
